Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test in colon cancer screening.
A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes and or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon, lower GI) and rectum. Air is used to insufflate the colon through the colonoscope for optimal visualization of the colon. In addition, our facility provides CO2 for insufflation resulting in a more comfortable patient experience.
A colonoscopy may be recommended by your provider to evaluate symptoms of such as:
- Rectal bleeding
- Change in bowel habits
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Lower abdominal pain
- Unexplained anemia
- Your age; a screening colonoscopy is recommended at age 50
- A personal history of colon cancer or colon polyps
- A family history of colon cancer or colon polyps
- Assess and monitor Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative colitis
- Colon cancer
- Colon polyps
- Diverticular disease
- Inflammation of the colon
- Infection of the colon
- Tissue biopsy; that tissue will be sent to a pathology lab and evaluated for any infection or disease process
- Dilation of a narrowing in the colon
- Removal of polyps
- Colon cancer
- Colon polyps
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Hemorrhoids
- Diverticular disease
